ABOUT ABOUT

Ranked as perhaps the greatest blues singer of all time, Bessie Smith was also a star of the vaudeville circuit, and one of the most successful African-American performers of the roaring twenties. Smith’s powerful contralto voice was a major influence on other performers, including Lady Zen, the opera-trained jazz and blues singer who settled in San Miguel a few years ago, and has become the city's most sought-after vocalist. For her two-nights-only concert at the San Miguel Playhouse, Lady Zen will be performing with pianist Susan Varcoe, bassist Antonio Lozoya, percussionist Juan José, and trumpeter Armando Servin.
